Dr Poom Prommachart

Poom Prommachart, a Steinway Artist from Bangkok, is a Senior Lecturer at Sunway University, School of Arts. In recognition of his dedication to education, he received the Student Appreciation of Teaching Award for Undergraduate Programmes in 2024.

Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at University College Fairview Malaysia (2021–2023).

Poom has earned significant recognition across Southeast Asia. He was awarded Best Solo Performance (Instrumental – Music) at the 2023 BOH Cameronian Arts Awards and was named to the Rector’s List of Honour for exceptional graduates from the University of Montreal’s Doctor of Music program in 2022. He holds degrees from the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal by King Charles III, and he also studied at the Moscow Conservatory.

His international career was launched in 2010 when he won the Gold Medal at the Fifth Isidor Bajić International Piano Competition. Since then, he has performed with major orchestras worldwide, including the Kazakhstan Philharmonic Orchestra, Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Timișoara Philharmonic Orchestra. His interpretations of Chopin and Prokofiev have received critical acclaim, and in 2020, he won the Grand Prize at the Orford Music Award in Canada.

Poom has also collaborated with Australian composer Carl Vine, who commissioned him for the world premiere of Three Fantasies—a project supported by United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB)—which debuted at the University of Hong Kong.

Beyond performing, he is highly sought after as an educator and researcher. He has given masterclasses and research presentations at leading institutions, including the Kazakhstan National Conservatory of Music, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (Singapore), Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the University of Hong Kong. He is also an Elite Fellow at the University of Malaya and, in 2025, will become the first Asian piano professor of the European Piano Teacher Association Denmark, joining the faculty for the 22nd International Piano Week.
